Romantic dining needn't be a formal affair. Getting dressed up to gaze at each other over a restaurant table while surrounded by strangers? Modern romance can mean curling up in front of the TV with your beloved in your favourite pyjamas and watching a boxset, finger food at the ready. We've rounded up four of our favourite restaurants with dishes that are perfect for sharing on the sofa.

1. Lebanese flatbread and dips, Shukran

The street food movement has seen Lebanese restaurants cropping up in all over the place. Shukran offers a variety of small dishes for two, such as vegetable croquettes with feta cheese, or crispy cheese rolls with a tomato jam. However, this place is perfect the simple  bread-and-dip set-up.

You've got labneh – handmade yogurt cream cheese finished with toasted nuts – and mutbal, made with smoked roasted aubergine, garlic and tahini. And, of course, the feast wouldn't be complete without hummus – go traditional, or try something a little bit different. Luxurious truffle hummus has black truffle oil and Kalamata olives stirred in, and fragrant basil hummus includes confit tomato and toasted pine nuts for a hummus one step away from Italy's pesto. All served with kiln-made Lebanese flatbread.

2. Sophisticated sushi, Koi Koi

Your pyjamas may be informal, but that doesn't mean you need to compromise on fine dining. Go swanky and order in some sophisticated sushi from Koi Koi – the ultimate in chic sharing options.

You've got gyoza, stuffed with pork or chicken and a whole host of oriental vegetables, for something hot. Maki are the iconic cylinders wrapped up snugly in seaweed. Uramaki are similar inside-out rolls with rice on the outside. And then there's the classic sashimi – raw fish that's delicate and light. Order a mix, and grab your chopsticks.

3. Fried chicken and hot wings, Rony's Perfect Chicken

Maybe it's not a classic first date sort of option, but take this as a test – the couples who can eat chicken wings together are the couples who live happily ever after. The clue's in the name at Rony's Perfect Chicken, with a mouth-watering menu of sharable chicken pieces and hot wings.

There are a few ready-to-go sharing platters for two, but you can also pick your own combinations. Hot and crispy deep-fried chicken in its signature spice mix coating, or sticky and smoky chicken wings – as mild or as spicy as you can manage.

4. Churros and chocolate, Churrería Chocolatería Las Farolas

If you're feeling a more romantic vibe, then you'll fall head over heels with this one. Churrería Chocolatería Las Farolas is a chocolate lover's heaven, serving up our beloved churros in sharing batches of 12 at a time.

Combining an elegant evening dessert with a hint of nostalgia, these sweet sugary sticks of dough never go out of style. The creamy chocolate dipping sauce is served by the litre, though you can get it in smaller and more civilised amounts if you wish. They also offer fresh pots of coffee, so you've got all your after-dinner delights in one place.
